Auxiliary Verb Constructions

This is the most comprehensive survey ever published of the auxiliary verb construction. Drawing on a database of over 800 languages Dr Anderson examines their morphosyntactic forms and semantic roles. He investigates and explains the historical changes leading to the cross-linguistic diversity of inflectional patterns, and presents his results within a new typological framework. He reveals much that is new about the language families of the world and makes an important contribution to the understanding of their nature and evolution.Review
Anderson handsomely accomplishes what he set out to do, and provides a solid basis for continued cross-linguistic study of AVCs. No one interested in auxiliary phenomena can afford to ignore its contents and its analyses. Sanford B. Steever, Linguistlist An insightful and thorough study...an impressive book with lots of examples, very well-produced...I very much like this study, since it provides a different way of looking at auxiliaries. Elly van Gelderen, Studies in Language

The New Fowler's Modern English Usage

For generations, lovers of the English language have turned to trusty copies of Fowler's to settle nagging grammatical questions, or, for true hard-core language junkies, for the sheer fun of reading H. W. Fowler's classic outrage contained in entries on "Hackneyed Phrases" or "Pedantic-Humour Words." The New Fowler's Modern English Usage, the first revision in more than 30 years, has not arrived without controversy. Some language (and Fowler) purists complain that the book is too liberal at times, noting that usage is common as opposed to correct. Those points are debatable, and, indeed, they're what makes the book's nearly 900 pages so interesting to peruse. The currency of the new Fowler's extends to, in
the entry on "Vogue Words," such novelties as "couch potato," "flavour of the month," "on a roll," and the notorious "parameter

Rules, Patterns and Words: Grammar and Lexis in English Language teaching

Grammar is central to language pedagogy and teachers need a clear description of what constitutes grammar and how it can best be taught in the English language classroom. This book illustrates a new way of describing the grammar of spoken and written English. He also discusses how the different aspects of the language require different learning processes and different teaching techniques. These processes and techniques are contextualised within a task-based approach to teaching and learning. Numerous interactive tasks are provided to guide readers and over forty examples of teaching exercises are included to illustrate techniques which can be applied in the classroom immediately.

This book is an exhaustive compilation of the most curious words that can be found in the language. It will serve students as a reference when they want to find the correct word to use. It will also help the teacher who wants to show pupils the oddities of the language

Quick Solutions to Common Errors in English

Designed to help resolve most common English language problems and queries, this book has an accessible reference format with examples and explanations of mistakes regarding sentence construction, spelling, punctuation and grammar

قواعد اللغة الانجليزية

Directed at the everyday speaker of American English, this dictionary aims to define English words with foreign sources surely a daunting task, since many English words have come from other languages. Varchaver and Moore (coauthors of The Dictionary of the Performing Arts) tried to limit the number of entries by including only those recently adopted, but as a result the word choice seems arbitrary. Entries include pronunciation, definition, and often a sample sentence to illustrate use. However, only about a quarter of the words have sample sentences, and many of the less familiar words were not among them. In addition, many of the samples are quite generic, and some include a citation noting the source, which seems unnecessary since this is not an academic book. This work may be of interest to the "browser" of the title and of limited assistance to someone seeking a simple etymology, but the serious scholar or lover of the language will find it lightweight. Manya Chylinski, Ernst . Young Ctr., for Business Knowledge, Boston

Colloquial English

Although this book is a member of the Colloquial series, andconforms broadly with the format and approach of other titles in the series, Colloquial English necessarily departs in some respects from its fellows. For a start, it is written in the target language, and an assumption of prior knowledge of the language must therefore be made. Nonetheless, I have tried to keep explanations simple and succinct, allowing the context of the dialogues and exercises to show the user how the language works
